The Importance of Self Care

Updated: May 4, 2022

Hey Royals! I hope everyone is safe and well. I have a couple questions. These are questions I had not given much thought to or thought of how they would affect my life until recently. It’s funny how things can happen to change your perspective on life. How short it is and how important is to take care of yourself; for yourself and those you love.

I want to know how you feel and what your thoughts are on the importance of self-care.

Question# 1…What does "self-care mean to you?

For me, self-care used to mean taking care of myself financially, be careful of dangerous situations or things of that nature. I thought that as long as I felt ok, I was ok. I had to learn that I was wrong the hard way. I was recently hospitalized for having two mini strokes and that was the ultimate eye-opener for me. I drew the line in the sand and chose me. I have always been one to put everyone and everything before me. I felt that I had to make sure that everyone was okay, and everything was handled.

Being a mother of seven and a business owner makes it difficult sometimes to think about yourself, to pay attention to the subtle hints your body is giving and focus on what you need to do for yourself; like getting enough rest or eating properly.

The days rush by and then you reach an age that your body no longer gives you subtle hints; it will shut you down and make you pay attention. You find yourself in the hospital with nothing but time to think about what you could have done differently to avoid landing you in this place.

Question# 2…What do you do for self-care?

I have adopted taking a long, hot bath at least once a week. I meditate in the mornings and in the evening sometimes, I have changed my eating habits and journal regularly. I walk and find things to do that I enjoy. Just take a mental and physical break. I have noticed a difference in how I feel and my focus.

I am no doctor or therapist...

Just sharing my tactics and what works for me. There are numerous articles out there with ideas and tips on this subject and this is one that I found informative. It speaks on how the pandemic has changed the way we do things in so many ways and what you can do to combat the overwhelming stress and uncertainty of our “new normal” and all that comes with it.

I am only sharing what works for me, but I admonish you to find a way to pamper yourself and take care of yourself. We only get one life, and it is vital that we do all we can to ensure that it is the best life we can live.
